Acupuncture Techniques

Balance Method:

The balance method, popularized by Richard Tan, draws on principles from TCM, Master Tung, and others, but often relies more (especially when treating pain) on the anatomical relationships of the meridians rather than specific points.

Master Tung System Acupuncture:

The Master Tung system from the Tung family lineage is passed down from ancestors over generations and is said to have over 700 points, some overlapping with TCM points. In the Tung system application, fewer points are generally used in the treatment strategy for various conditions.

T.C.M Traditional Chinese Medicine:

T.C.M. acupuncture uses points (around 361) belonging to 14 main meridians or channels with points on them (meridians are energetic pathways that stream through different body parts and join with various organ systems). These channels have multiple points along their outer pathway, like switches used to regulate various bodily functions and treat disharmonies from different pathological interferences.

Scalp Acupuncture:

Scalp acupuncture (using areas on the head) and Auricular acupuncture (using areas on the ear) can be thought of in the way you might have heard of hand or foot reflexology, where the entire body is mapped out on smaller locations of the body (micro-systems). (This concept is used in many other micro-systems of the body.) Auricular acupuncture can use fine needles as in traditional acupuncture or by using ear seeds, which are very small seeds (usually Vaccaria seed, but other material is sometimes used) that are set and attached on specific ear points using a bandaid-like material that can be left on for several days and ”lightly” stimulated throughout the day for continued effect.

What to Expect as a First-Time Patient of Acupuncture Therapy

@ Paragon Integrated Medical Lake Elsinore

We will want to review your general health history and the history of your chief complaint.

Depending on your condition, we may examine certain areas of the body and perform specific tests, such as orthopedic, neurologic range of motion, and palpation (using hands to feel the tissues and areas). We may also check your tongue and pulse, for in Oriental medicine, these may give clues in certain situations.

Once we ascertain what acupuncture points or areas might be appropriate for your condition, we will perform acupuncture to those areas using very fine (hair-like) needles to the points (Acupuncture needles are so fine often 10-30 might fit in a hypodermic needle depending on the gage of each). Although acupuncture points are located all over the body, the most commonly used points are on the arms, legs, hands, and feet, so there is generally no need for disrobing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Non-Opioid Pain Management

What are non-opioid pain management treatments?
Non-opioid pain management involves the use of drugs and therapies that do not include opioids. These treatments can include over-the-counter medications like NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) and acetaminophen, as well as alternative therapies such as physical therapy, chiropractic care, and laser therapy. The goal is to manage pain without the risks associated with opioid use, such as dependency and significant side effects.
Why should I consider non-opioid treatments for pain management?
Non-opioid treatments are recommended to avoid the risk of dependency and the side effects associated with opioid use. These treatments are often equally effective for managing various types of pain, especially when combined with holistic approaches. They can be a safer option for long-term pain management.
Are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) safe?
NSAIDs are generally safe for most people when used as directed. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication, especially if you have health conditions like kidney disease, stomach ulcers, or heart disease, as NSAIDs can have side effects related to these conditions.
Can physical therapy really help manage pain?
Yes, physical therapy can be very effective in managing pain. It helps by strengthening muscles, increasing flexibility, and improving joint stability. Physical therapy can also help reduce inflammation and enhance mobility, which can significantly reduce pain.
What should I expect during my first visit for pain management consultation?
During your first visit, you will undergo a comprehensive assessment to determine the cause of your pain and discuss your medical history. Our specialists will craft a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. This plan may include a combination of medication, therapy, and lifestyle adjustments aimed at effectively managing your pain.
How long does it take to see results from non-opioid pain management treatments?
The time to see results can vary depending on the individual and the type of treatment used. Some patients may experience relief immediately, while others may find it takes a few weeks to notice significant changes. It’s important to follow the treatment plan and communicate regularly with your healthcare provider about your progress.
